17/20, but I admit I had to cheat and Google 'abbatoir'. (In my defense, if I hadn't given up too early, I would've figured out Brave New World).

I thought it was Cry Beloved Country but it would not work--so I admit I googled it. But got others by logic, not because I knew them well enough. Great quiz to make us think.

I'm still in awe that I got Cry the beloved country - I have never heard of this book before, but I just wrote the equivalent words that came to my mind, and it worked! Didn't quite work as well with Brave New World and The Red Badge of Courage though, because I don't equate contemporary with New so I didn't think of it, and I wasn't sure enough what "token" meant in the context to find a synonym. Oh well. Very entertaining quiz idea BTW!

I am pretty sure neither "works" nor "labours" is supposed to have an apostrophe in them. It's not a genetive!
+4
Level 44
Jul 17, 2014
No, but it's a contraction. Love's(thing belonging to love) labour's(labour is) lost. Romance's(thing belonging to romance) work's(work is) misplaced. Therefore, the labour belonging to love is lost, or the work belonging to romance is misplaced. Or, I suppose, the labour of love is lost, and the work of romance is misplaced.

Fun quiz! But, seems a bit inconsistent about whether or not you need to type "the" to get the answer. I tried typing cry beloved country, but it wouldn't take it. Can you streamline some of the answers a little?
