QM is looking to ignite the debate around Die Hard. :-)

I laughed when I saw Die Hard on here. I have a coworker who loves to start a discussion about Christmas movies so he can proudly proclaim Die Hard is the best Christmas movie ever! :)

There are two types of people in the world; those who believe Die Hard is a Christmas movie and those who are wrong.

There's no debate. Die Hard is the best Christmas movie ever!

I feel like there should be a more iconic image out there for Love Actually (not sure what it would be off the top of my head). The rest of these are generally pretty obvious as long as you've seen the movie.

Agreed. I have watched the movie but this picture didn't ring a bell.

I got it instantly from only the top half of the image - but I think I've seen that film more than most. I reckon (if not the cue cards) either Hugh Grant or Alan Rickman would be slightly better.

Nice job including Gremlins, but why didn't you include the best Christmas movie ever, Eyes Wide Shut?

Nice selection here!

My vote goes to Gremlins and TNBC without hesitation. Personally, I would include Batman Returns in my Top 5.

I'm so over people arguing about whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie or not. It's not funny, nor interesting, nor cool, nor subversive, nor original to believe one way or the other. Nobody actually cares, but they think that by pretending they do they are being one of the above things. I even saw this become a major plot point in some dumb Hallmark rom-com a year or two ago... like your opinion about this is really some important component of your identity that will help you connect with your soul mate. I'm sure the screenwriter thought they were being so hip and authentic and topical. Ugh.

Sometimes I wonder about the definition of "Christmas movie". Is it films that are about Christmas, films that have nothing to do with Christmas or its spirit but happen to be set in late December, or just films that were released around Christmas, regardless of whether they are about the festive period or not?

The quiz instructions are "movies that took place at Christmastime", so there's no need to wonder.

Another row would be great! My suggestions:

Scrooged!

Miracle on 34th Street

A Charlie Brown Christmas

Jingle All the Way

Technically The Nightmare Before Christmas, while having Christmas in the title, is not a Christmas movie. The director Henry Selick has gone on record saying it is a Halloween movie. Good quiz otherwise

I just saw a video five minutes ago where John McTiernan says it didn't start as one, but as production continued and they kept emphasizing the everyman/working class roots of John McClane, Reginald, and Argyle contrasted with the ineptitude of all the authority figures like the police chief and FBI agents it became a Christmas movie--a movie about the little guys looking out for each other and spreading peace and joy...and bombs and bullets I suppose.

I got 16/16 but I've only seen 9/16, although I did see the Grinch again last night (the only Grinch is the Chuck Jones Grinch). Merry Christmas, everyone!
