On actual land, the space between the territories and the Netherlands would not count

how much longitude was the ussr?

Not much more, because only the gap between mainland Russia and the Kaliningrad exclave is removed of the longitude span, namely about 4.5 degrees.

So, for the USSR it was about 171 degrees.

Ok, I was about to complain, but in fact, I will defend the quizmaster. In fact, he has changed the whole definition of the quiz. It's not anymore the difference between the eastermost and westernmost points, but the number of degrees of longitude it touches, so for example, for Spain, the sum of the "width" of the peninsula + the span of the different islands of the Canaries and the Baelares, which is much less than 22 degrees of course.

Earlier this afternoon, I was about to suggest this alternative, so I think it was a right choice. Just maybe he should have made a comment to explain that?

This makes more sense. I should've pondered the rewording of the directions more as you did. Thanks

Actually, as per the description, it’s the number of degrees of latitude it touches.

That's another matter, but he will correct it, for sure.

This said, 31.5° seems a bit much for France. Given the large number of overseas territories, it is hard to take everything into account (good luck checking all of Polynesia ^^). But having checked quickly, I find : 13° for the Hexagon, 1° for Corsica, 4° for the Antilles and Guiana, 1° for Reunion, 3° for New Caledonia, 2° for Kerguelen... Polynesia, I frankly can't tell... but I would be surprised if it made 6° in total, the rest of the territories making about a little degree or so.

You have to add the other Austral territories, Mayotte, Wallis and Futuna, and St Pierre and Miquelon and he might be around the 31,5°

Now that you say it, maybe the problem is with Terre Adélie? It spans 6° in Antarctica, but I think it should be excluded because of the Antarctic Treaty.

No, we don't include claims within Antarctica.

I double checked the numbers for France. They are correct.

There are a LOT of things to add. Here are the largest 6:

The Hexagon: 13

French Guiana: 3.6

New Caledonia: 3

Kerguelen Islands: 2

Corsica: 1

Martinique: 1

In all, we add 86 different slices of the world representing different territories and islands. This is why it's important to write a script to do this instead of relying on intuition.

Yes, the main parts make about 25 degrees, those are the numbers I had measured too. In fact, the rest is indeed in Polynesia, especially the Tuamotu atolls which cover about half of the longitude between 140 and 150 degrees!

Just look at Rangiroa and Makemo which lean almost "horizontal" on more than a half degree each. And they are inhabited too. Almost as amazing as the EEZ they get from all those rocks all around the world ^^.

Equatorial countries are disadvantaged, they need a full 111km to make a degree, while northern countries, at say 60°N, like Russia and Norway only need half of that.

I was rather wondering about Uzbekistan, but I found about 17 degrees.

I was sure the last one I was missing was going to be some extreme polar country that touched a lot of degrees even though it wasn't as wide. But no, just an island country that I think of as more vertical than it is.

then what do they mean by "no mecessarily on a single land mass"?

It can be seperate islands, but only the islands would be counted, not the surrounding water. So the pieces of land can be all over the world, but you are not connecting them.

So if a country existed of 1km of land near america 1km near europe and 1 km near japan it would not cover a lot of degrees, even though the reach is almost a big as possible.

To show it visually. __________ ________would score high on this quiz

While _ _ _ _ _ would not

Edit hmm the spacing changes when the comment gets submitted. And I forgotten the code to keep it as it is typed.. (just imaginine a lot of space between the last line of dashes ;) )
