It looks like you've excluded possessions on Antarctica (Ross Dependency, etc) - if so you might want to make that clear in the instructions.

I've best heard Kiribati describes as a handful of tiny islands spanning a stretch of ocean the size of Australia.

I was surprised South Africa didn't make it in. Looks like it barely misses with 2,932 km from Marion Island to the Botswana-Namibia tripoint.

Looks like France should be #1 - I get a distance of 18,151 km from Clipperton Island to Tromelin Island (French Southern and Antarctic Lands).

The quiz doesn't mention overseas territories, it mentions overseas "possessions". Just take it to mean and dependent or controlled territories anywhere in the world regardless of official status.

I would suggest adding a note to let folks know if Antarctic claims are included or not. The reason being there are a lot of conflicting and overlapping claims, some of which are not recognized (e.g. the US and Russia doesn't recognize anyones claims to Antarctica).

How are so many people missing Kiribati??? Every time I look at a map of Oceania (which is not that often, but more than an average person), I see two large areas, which are FSM and Kiribati.
