Technically, Gibraltar is a British overseas territory and not a city according to the European Union.
+5
Level 94
Aug 20, 2013
Yes, Gibralter is an overseas territory, but the capital city of Gibralter is Gibralter. If you want to get picky, the Spanish town of Tarifa is closer to Africa, though it's just over half the size of Gibralter, so may not be counted a 'city.'

I'm aware that the term city is used loosely on this site, but where I like Quiberon and would love it to be on a quiz, Quimper is an actual city.

Technically, the closest cities to Africa are Ceuta and Melilla, that belong to Spain. They're in fact in African territory, but they're spanish.

No because antwerp is flemish, so antwerpen could be correct, the name in dutch, which is their official language. But not anvers otherwise you should accept the arabic or polish word for it too

Gibraltar isn't the closest city to Africa. Tarifa is the closest, but even if we're pedantic and argue that's a town, Algeciras is still closer.
+1
Level 61
Apr 28, 2026
Saying Tarifa is a town and not a city is about as pedantic as insisting that the Mediterranean is a sea and not an ocean. Granted about Algeciras though.
