I agree with you- we all know Cyprus is closer to Africa and Asia but it is still hard to put it in a category because it is an island - therefore not attached to a continent directly. And given the fact that it is still close enough to Europe geographically but especially culturally plus an EU member it should be considered Europe

The CIA World Factbook had better check with the experts at the CDC. In the National Vital Statistics Report published June 24, 2019, they said that the US life expectancy fell, for the 3rd year in a row, now down to 78.6 years. The US would still be on the list, but near the bottom. And no where near 80.1. The CDC publishes this every year, so I don't know where the CIA is getting their info but maybe going to the epidemiologists who actually study this might be a good idea.
+3
Level ∞
Aug 17, 2019
78.6 and 80.1 aren't really that different. Does the CDC publish an error range? I would expect that the numbers for other countries would actually have much larger error ranges.

I think it's pretty clear that Cyprus is in Europe. I see people talking in the comments here about where you draw the boundary but it's a cultural thing. As a landmass it really is just Eurasia, the division of Europe and Asia is cultural... and when people say "It's closer to Asia" I think they mean "It's closer to Turkey which I've identified as being an Asian country". But the thing is it's possible for a country to exist in both... Russia for example has a European bit and an Asian bit... I would say the same is true for Turkey... the west half is clearly Europe especially "East Thrace"... and if you look at how far Ukraine stretches... Cyprus being in Europe is not problematic if Ukraine is allowed to stretch so far into the Caucasus and still be unambiguously named as a European country. It's a cultural thing... Cyprus is in the EU... there's no doubt about it. It's Europe.

Cyprus is actually much closer to Israel, Syria, and Lebanon which none are considered European. Israel is very culturally European but it is never considered so. European boundaries can differ from either using the Ural and Caucasian mountains as borders or just a straight line going directly north and south from the tip of Ukraine. Either way Ukraine is 100% European

algeria has a very arabic culture, should we put it asia?

Or maybe the other way around: Indonesia has a very arabic culture, should we put it in Africa?

Armenia has a very strong european culture because of religion, should we put it in europe? If yes, should we also put Papua new guinea?

How can you judge what continent a country is on just based on the people living there? Should we say the french territory Saint Pierre et Miquelon is in europe because of its culture?

The culture of a country is not related to its geographic location, culture is about people, continent is about location. Strip a place of its people, look where it is, that's the continent it belongs. It is way closer to africa and asia than to europe. No Matter how you take the limit, cyprus is always in asia. Turkey and Russia are more or less subjective, regarding how you delimit europe. Cyprus is not.

Cyprus is Asian

Côte d'ivoire is not the name of a country--in fact all French speaking countries with French names are not allowed to decide that the names of their countries are in French.*

*This rule does not apply to Spanish speaking countries, which are NEVER translated to English.

City populations all come from a strange German website with its own definitions of what a metropolitan region entails.

+3
Level 83
Oct 28, 2021
Arbitrary city limits are an awful way to actually judge the actual populations of cities. San Francisco is way bigger than 1 million people, but because it gets hard for a municipal government to manage services for millions of people, bigger cities tend to have multiple municipal governments. Sure, you could really insist that, say, Vancouver and Surrey are different cities. But have you ever been there? Vancouver's urban area sprawls into all the surrounding "cities". There's no reason to care about the "proper" city population unless you're an urban planner. If you want the true picture of San Francisco, its population is 4.8 million. Vancouver's population is about 2.2 million, not 600,000.

Literally all countries are translated to english.

I didn't see Deutchland or suomi, i saw germany and finland. Same for spain (espana).

Cyprus is a long debate, but if you consider geographic location only, it is clearly on the asian continent. The limits of europe are ural, caucasius, black sea, istanbul strait, and gibraltar, making cyprus clearly in asia. Besides, in terms of distances, cyprus is closer to asia. It is also in fact, closer to africa than europe.

The only thing that could make cyprus in europe is the culture, but if we start doing that, might as well reconsider pretty much half of the countries (Australia is in Eurovision and has a western economy closer to europe than any other country in oceania, should we put it in europe?)

For the cities, the comment above answered it really well. Paris would have only 1 milions habitants if you consider only the city limit, when in reality they are 10 milions
