Philadelphia is an old Colonial city wedged in the middle of the Northeast Megalopolis. Pittsburgh is a hill steel town that uses coal.

Its the name of a team so its a proper noun which is a name so it doesn't have to be grammatically correct.

Its actually proper English. First its a proper and collective noun adding an "s" is all that is required. Second, the team is not named after a maple leaf but either the Maple Leaf regiment in the Canadian Army or the use of the maple leaf badge.
