I've only ever heard 'gnu' pronounced with a vocalised 'g' (as in the Sesame Street song), but I Googled it and you're right, it should be silent. That's my new thing for the day, so thanks for that QM.

The Great Space Coaster's 'Gary Gnu' character taught an entire generation of kids to pronounce the 'g', as in 'Guh-New' ... I'd forgotten about that until I saw the comments.

Indeed, the g may or may not be silent depending on the pronunciation. Merriam-Webster lists both pronunciations.

The clue for “arraign” isn’t quite right. Arraignment does not formally charge you with a crime – you have already been charged before that. To arraign someone is simply to read the charges against them (the indictment) to them in open court; they are then expected to enter a plea.

In Italian the 'g' and 'n' combined makes a "nye" sound so the 'g' is actually not silent.
