Nationalities at the early olympics could be confusing. Australia was not an independent country rather six colonies but one athlete is regarded retroactively. Yet several of the British athletes were born in Australia, Ireland or India. Some of the Greeks were from Cyprus and Egypt then part of the Ottoman Empire.

Austria-Hungary despite being one empire competed as separate countries.

In the 1900 Olympics, Bohemia competed separate from Austria-Hungary thus making it one empire three countries.
