one could argue that Mike Hawthorn didn't defend due to retirement. unfortunately he passed away before the 1959 season, so when he passed he was still reigning champion

True. But he had already announced his retirement from F1, so even if he hadn't died, he wasn't going to defend it. That's why F1 officially list his reason as "retired".
