Based on CURRENT countries, identify the national birthplaces of 138 of the 139 Roman Catholic popes installed between 33 A.D. & 999 A.D. (In one case, the birthplace can only be identified as North Africa).
Excludes antipopes, of whom there were 17 between the 3rd & 10th centuries.
The number of 138 identifiable papal birthplaces matches that in the Vatican's "Annuario Pontificio".
Countries with an equal number of popes are listed in chronological order.
The country marked 1** is not a United Nations member state.
