There is no Pan-American highway because of the Darien gap

Yeah tbh I was a bit torn on including this question, it does exist it's just more so a network of roads.

Looking at Google Maps, the North American highway ends in the Panamanian city of Yaviza, while the South American highway loops in Colombia, where it is close to but never crosses the Colombia-Panama border. What am I missing?
