No, not everyone in Vatican city is a priest. Many people work for the Vatican without being priests, like administrators, accountants, the Swiss guard, chefs, janitorial staff, diplomats, museum workers, etc. Most (certainly not all) of these people being Catholics, there is a high fertility rate for the women employed there, as well as the families of the men employed there.
The use of "poor" to describe the level of GDP is wrong. It should be changed instead to "smaller", as it refers to the size of the economy, not to a country's wealth. Egypt and Poland for example have higher GDP than Greece and Portugal but on average most Egyptians and Poles are poorer than most Greeks and Portuguese.
Even GDP per capita is not necessarily a good indicator of individual happiness. Many of the South Pacific island nations I have visited feature heavily among the “poorest” countries of the world, yet their citizens are easily the happiest of any humans I have ever met. They don’t have much stuff, but humans clearly don’t require much stuff to be happy.
That misconception is what underpins western capitalism, and it is a flawed ideology.
Technically, the United Kingdom borders Spain as of Countries by Borders in 90 seconds, so Portugal would be the 5th most populous country which borders only one other country.
It's probably one of those countries that is amazing for foreign tourists and retirees, but not so great for young people who live there with limited economic opportunities.
Somehow got it in my head that only European countries were acceptable. Got all except the Portuguese speakers question before I realized that other continents were fair game, too...
Back to the Vatican, don't you think it is the among the countries with the highest average age? Not a lot of kids living there, so who's bringing down the average?
Doesn't png qualify for most populous countries that only border one other country? If it qualifies for most populous countries starting with p and only borders Indonesia, it should be accepted there as well
Yes, thats inconsistent. Portugal and PNG roughly have the same population. Either PNG counts for both, more populous countries with P and more populous countries with one border, or it doesnt count for both.
However, with fertility absolutely cratering around the world, there are many, may countries below Portugal.
Much of Latin American now has ultra-low fertility, for example.

But wealth and happiness are highly correlated, both at the individual and societal level.

According to legend, Lisbon was founded by Ulysses.
