Note: Big Ben stands here for the Clock Tower building, not only the Bell Tower, like it is commolny the part taken for the whole.

Super cool idea and execution! These timelines really put things in perspective. The leaning tower is older than I thought. Where did you get those images? They're great. :)

Thanks dug! Personally, it is the Taj Mahal that I imagined to be older :)

The small images are made by me, based on free "flat icons" models found on The Noun Project.

Even if you don't know that the Taj Mahal was built by the Mughals, you can still figure it out by its architecture; it doesn't look remotely like anything built in India before the Mughals arrived. Islamic styles of architecture had been introduced by the Delhi Sultanate, but native Indian styles continued to prevail until the arrival of the Mughals. The Mughals only conquered India in the mid-16th century, so by its very design, you can figure out that the Taj Mahal cannot have been much older than it actually is.

Thank you for sharing this insightful comment! It is indeed a clever way to deduce the approximate date of building of the Taj Mahal.

The little images make an extra "collect them all" challenge.

Thanks for your comment :)

For a famous European church, 16th century is pretty recent I think.

Great idea!!! And love the images. Just wondering though, why the Leaning Tower of Pisa ends up falling down once the quiz is submitted. :-)

Just to be pedantic, please note that "Big Ben" is not a building, it is a bell inside the clock tower.

Yes, the tower that houses the bell called Big Ben, is called the Elizabeth Tower.

That was fun, thanks. I think it'd be improved by going in reverse-chronological order, but that's just my .02.

Great idea - loved the graphics when you get a correct answer. Minor point, Big Ben is actually the name of the bell and not the tower (building) it is housed in allthough they have become synonomous. It was originally called the (the Palace of Westminster) Clock Tower but rechristened the Elizabeth Tower in 2012. Might want to call it Big Ben Clock Tower to prevent other pedantic fools like me commenting.

You're right. Big Ben is not even the official name of the bell, which is "Great Bell".

I checked the wikipedia page and noticed that you're correct about the official opening of the Petronas Twin Towers. This confused me though, since I was there in early 1998 and the towers were definitely open. (My first time in KL, a 12-story tower just fell over the day I arrived. I think all Malaysians of a certain age remember that one.)

I was just going to comment on the earlier presence of the Petronas Towers, as I was also in KL in Jan./Feb. 1998. I do not recall the mishap of that other tower though. Must have happened after my visit.

A little word to clarify the dates: the structure of the Petronas Twin Towers was completed in 1996, and although they were occupied and visitable in since 1998, I decided to follow the date of the declared official opening as you found it on wikipedia.

Ooh. I like this quiz. Even if I didn't get them all right! Timelines. Little building images. And the right balance of challenging but doable. Had no idea about the Sydney Opera House (although I did somehow get it right by process of elimination!). The opening decade of the Sydney Opera House is what I learned about today. All I knew was that it had been around all my life. I love days when I learn something new. ;)
