It's actually astonishing how similar romance languages are to each other. Knowing Spanish on a communicative level is enough to understand Portuguese, French, Italian, Latin and maybe even a bit of Romanian. Linguistics rule.
We do say "auto" but more often you will hear "char" for car in Québécois French. Also, socks are "des bas" (which means pantyhose in France), and usually you will hear "un crayon à mine" for a pencil, as opposed to "un crayon de couleur" for a coloured pencil or "un crayon de cire" for what in the U.S. is called a crayon. A lollipop is "un suçon" in Québec, which means hickey in France—but in Québec we use "une sucette" for hickey, so the words are switched.
