Update Log:

?/?/20-Added an SVG map with dots for better experience.

4/03/21-Added Netherland, China, and various missing overseas territories. Hopefully will be able to remove the dots and highlight French Guiana, Greenland, Falklands, and Puerto Rico, Western Sahara, West Bank and add Antarctica.

4/04/21-Disputed territories will now be gray.

6/10/21-It's been a while! Updated Navassa island to be disputed (USA and Haiti), removed Reunion, Guadeloupe and Martinique, added some more type-ins, and added information for disputed territories. Also removed Antarctica as a viable answer because it doesn't show up on the map.

6/19/21- Added a whole load of type-ins, most notably adding the ability to not have to type in the full name (Ex: 'Jarvis Atoll' now accepts 'Jarvis'), fixed broken dots, and removed grey dots (weren't changing color to green when answered). Removed French administrative subdivisions, and re-added missing overseas territories.

Update Log:

05/26/25

It's been a while. I did a school project on this which restarted my interest so I'll see if I can fix this before I go to college. Some issues I've found/been told via comments:

-Ceuta/Melilla missing(?)

-Netherlands Antilles no longer exists

- "Scattered Islands" are included within France's "French Southern and Antarctic Lands" territory; Saint Barthelemy should be an Overseas Collective

-Navassa Island is disputed

-Some dots not lighting up when answered correctly?

-Constituent Dutch countries included(?)

-I would also like to make Greenland/Western Sahara/Puerto Rico highlighted when answered, still trying to figure out how.

Clearly, I need some help. If you have any suggestions / corrections to make please let me know, I would like to fix this quiz. Any help would be appreciated with this.

Dhekelia is usually Akrotiri and Dhekelia, the source you use has them seperate although in that case you missed out Akrotiri. But usually they are listed together as one territory.

Good quiz and challenging. I tried "South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands" which didn't work; I was a trifle miffed when I noted that the reason was that I had omitted the word "the"!

I tried making it a clickable map, but then I realized that not every territory is listed on the map, so I made a text quiz instead. Also, I know how it is when I miss the spelling by one word or a letter, and it's really frustrating! I know how you feel :D. Thanks for the positive feedback!

Good quiz, the only thing I would change is the title itself. "Countries by Oversea Territories" would perhaps be more relevant. I am now officially invested in your quizzes, therefore I am your first subscriber.

It would be hard unless you used a spreadsheet to change this now, so next time try to increase the opacity so the circles arent so small.

How would using a spreadsheet make inputting coordinates easier? Because then you would have to input the coords into the spreadsheet then re-paste them into the dot placer.

Level 72
Feb 3, 2021
Using a spreadsheet allows you to save the dot placing information. Just copy and paste your dot info from the dot placing page and put it on a spreadsheet. Because you press tab, it goes into the cells perfectly. Then just press ctrl+a on the spreadsheet and copy that back on the dot placer if you ever want to edit the SVG.

Hawaii and Alaska are states, but french Guiana isn't really a state. It's more of a overseas department. Hawaii is more of a non-continental state. I'll add a caveat explaining.

No, see here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overseas_departments_and_regions_of_France

French administrative subdivisions are a bit of a mess, but French Guiana has the same status as Réunion, Mayotte, Guadeloupe and Martinique. All of these are departments with equal status to the departments within continental France, and should NOT be on this quiz.

Nice quiz! But I'm a bit confused on why Hong Kong and Macau are considered overseas territories?

Also, I think you could be a bit more generous with type-ins. For example, I think you should accept just "St Pierre" for St Pierre and Miquelon, and anything with "Indian Ocean" for BIOT (so that people don't have to type out "territories").

Aren't all the french islands around Madagascar (excluding Reunion and Mayotte) administrated together as the Scattered Islands?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scattered_Islands_in_the_Indian_Ocean

Furthermore, these islands are a subdivision of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Southern_and_Antarctic_Lands

Might be worth including under French Southern and Antarctic Lands?

They are overseas but they aren’t territories, they are municipalities of the Netherlands itself, whereas the ABC islands and Sint Maarten are separate territories with autonomy.

A few things:

•The Dot for Baker Island Stays Orange

•Åland is Missing

•If your goal is to not include Integral Territories, then Palmyra, Jan Mayen, and The Caribbean Netherlands should be removed

•Palestine, Western Sahara, and some islands in the South China Sea were included (They're not considered Territories)

•The Scattered Islands were separated from each other and from the FSAL

•You Mixed Up The Cook Islands and Tokelau (Tokelau is the Dependent Territory, Cook Islands is the Associated State along with Niue

Hope this helps!

I'm going to see if I can get some help with fixing this quiz. It's a bit of a passion project so I want to get it looking good.

-Palmyra is a 'incorporated, unorganized territory', so I believe it should be included, but I will verify.

-I will look into removing the disputed territories section, since what defines a disputed 'territory' is pretty vague.

-Svalbard and Jan Mayen are 'integral parts' of Norway, so I think they should be removed as you suggest

-Scattered islands are part of the FSAL, but the incorrect source I used separated them. I left it the way it is now until I could figure out how to fix the map.

-Noted for the other corrections.

Thank you for the help!
