I don't know where the "borders" (is Greenland in North America?) are but I would have guessed Norway to be closer than Netherlands and UK closer than Uruguay

Agree with Norway & UK, and that seems to be the case whether you class Greenland as North American or European.

Trinidad and Tobago to Uruguay is 2800 miles. Panama to Uruguay is 2900 miles. Newfoundland to UK is 2000 miles. The UK is closer to North America than Uruguay is.
