I wonder even how they collect the figures for Denmark. Maybe there are border controls back on now, but I remember jumping on a train in Copenhagen when I was visiting a relative there and being in Malmo half an hour later. I guess the Swedes will have no record of me being in Sweden other than a couple of credit card transactions.

Might be measured by number of hotel/holiday-home rentals. I remember when working in a hotel we had to put in Business/leasure with every guest and send it to the Danish Statistics..

In tourism figures it's nearly always overnight stays that count, daytrippers or people passing through don't.

Also they don't record personal data, so it's actually number of arrivals, not tourists – i.e. each time you come to stay, it's counted separately: 1 visit for 5 days = one tourist, 5 visits for 1 day each = 5 tourists.

They don't check you papers on the way to denmark, but they do on the way back

Exactly. Because of the high amount of immigrants entering Sweden.

This is rather recent, due to the high amount of Syrian refugees that started entering the country last year

In addition scandinavians have very many cabins/ holiday residents in spain. Therefore very many travel there. Sulps i love the climate here in norway. It just rains a bit too much on the west coast of norway. Like a lot. Now its not so cold as it used to. Winter 18/19 it was just snow in the lowlands at home in 3 weeks!!! Summer of 2018 it were measured astonoshing 38,4 degrees celsius.

@Sulps It's not sooooo hot here, it's normal for the summer, it's just that where you live it's cold. Hot is uncomfortable but when you have beaches and all you end up enjoying the weather.

Actually you aren't the only one, I love the cold weather and would rather be in the super cold than even mildly hot places.

Thailand is crazy popular among Nordic people. I'm Finnish myself and of all the Finnish and Swedish people I know, I'm sure at least 25-30% of those have been to Thailand.

Spain is pretty high because there are loads of charter and group holidays arranged to i.e. Canary Islands from Sweden. I'd say majority of those who travel to Spain either go to Barcelona or La Palma, Majorca or Tenerife (or some other major island). It's often the cheapest choice if you're looking to sunbathe and swim :P

Spain is a very popular tourist destination for a lot of Europeans, especially from northern Europe (UK, Benelux, Germany, Scandinavia).

I guessed Thailand purely because I went diving there and met a large group of Swedes doing the same. Didn't know if it was a thing, or just one of those random things when travelling. Turns out it's a thing :)

It is because many Thai immigrants live in Northern Sweden in to pick berries (its a laborious task which not many Swedes or would do themselves), and they travel back to Thailand to meet their families.

Thailand is a big tourist spot. I strongly doubt that there are 344,000 Thais living in Sweden to pick berries.

Probably although there is a lot of people traveling back and forth between these countries they don't spend nights in hotels so difficult to assign to "holiday travels". Mostly work related trips with lorry drivers or handymen traveling between Sweden and Poland.

I was in Gran Canaria a couple of years ago. It’s part of Spain of course, but seemed to have more Scandinavians & Germans there than locals. Christmas/New Year is the best time for them to visit, getting away from their cold countries!
