Originally, in Europe, instead of a groundhog, the animal was a
badger.
The traditions were brought to the

by the German-speaking
Pennsylvania Dutch cultural group.
The most famous celebration is in the town of
Punxsutawney
in the state of
Pennsylvania
in the
United States
where there is a groundhog named
Phil.
It has been celebrated there since the year
1887.
Every year the townspeople gather at
Gobbler's Knob
to find out if the groundhog will see its
shadow.
If it does see it, that means there will be
6 weeks
more of
winter.
(Another word for groundhog is
woodchuck.)
