Dropping "the" right before the country's name sounds real badass. It's the Sudan!

Yet try dropping a "the" in front of Ukraine -- it brings out all the nationalists. Apparently "the" will create the idea it's a geographic entity not a nation. Something the Netherlands, the Gambia, the Sudan, the Congo, the Philippines etc don't have a problem with.
