Sorry to be a pedant, but its not technically accurate to say that the US controlled West Germany after World War 2. The US controlled one of four Allied Occupied Zones of Germany (France, the UK and the USSR controlled one each of the other three). It was only in 1949 that the three zones controlled by France, the UK and the US were combined into the newly formed state of the Federal Republic of Germany (commonly known as West Germany).West Germany only came into existence at this point and was from the outset an independent sovereign state. It is thus only accurate to say that, after WW2, the US controlled part of what would go on to become West Germany.
