It has only been retired from combat roles. The air force still flies about 45 aircraft. These are mainly for testing purposes and aggressor training.

There are duplicates. For example the Marine Corps. the Navy and the Air Force all operate the F-35 lightning. Yes there are different variants but it is essentially the same aircraft. In total there are 7.
