Historical background: British protectorates were treaty arrangements between the U.K. and local rulers whereby (1) the U.K. exercised control over defense and foreign affairs; (2) the local ruler(s) retained absolute control over internal affairs; and (3) local rulers and their subjects usually had the status of British Protected Person, but were not necessarily considered British nationals.
