I feel some languages are a little too split up, for example Austrians clearly speak German, even though they have a dialect. But I guess you just used what the source gave you :)
they definitely speak German in Austria lol...have pen pals from there who understand/speak/write standard German. I have never heard of Bavarian. it's like splitting American English into "Northeastern" "Southern" and "Valley girl" dialects lol
Bavarian is way more distinct from standard german than the accents you mentioned. There are differences in vocabulary and even grammar and they are so great austrian german isnt intelligible to people who only speak high german. The official language of austria is high german, yes, but that doesnt mean people speak it at home.
This has easily become one of my favorite quizzes on the site and im in awe of how much work and research this must have taken. Especially how much thought you put into the typeins. Im amazed at Adyghe in Jordan and Erzya in Lithuania and Latvia placing within the top 10. With that said, here are a few nitpicks (I know most of these might have been cause by inconsistencies in the dialect/language distinction in different census):
- You have a fairly broad definition for Arabic, so why not also count Hassaniyya with arabic as a typein?
- Why count Samogitian as distinct from Lithuanian and not Aukštatian? Is there a reason in the dialect being further from Lithuanian proper?
- Could you accept Hokkien for Min Nan Chinese?
- Could you accepts some less specific typeins for Gronings, Sallands, Twents and Drents, like Low Saxon or Westphalian?
- Pontic might be close enough to Greek, in my opinion, to warrant having Greek as a typein
I'm probably the only whone who'll manage to get Gheg without getting Albanian
