Proclamation Line of 1763, prohibiting white settlements to the

Pontiac's Rebellion

A group of 14,000 unemployed military veterans went to lobby
Congress in Washington for a payment approved in 1926; removed
by federal troops headed by MacArthur, Eisenhower, and Patton.
Bonus Army
1763
Group of men from Pennsylvania murdered 20 Conestoga Indians,
upset at not receiving aid to stop Indian attacks; they were talked
out of continuing their rampage by Benjamin Franklin.
Paxton Boys
1965
A 6-day race riot in Los Angeles; 34 people were killed, and many
other race riots followed.
Watts Riot
1676
A major armed uprising in colonial Virginia caused by high taxes
and frontier conflict; resulted in burning of Jamestown.
Bacon's Rebellion
1798
3 American men were sent to persuade the French to stop
harassing American ships; each were met by a French advisor to
solicit bribes from them, and all 3 refused; led to great public
resentment of the French when news broke.
XYZ Affair
1786
Caused by high taxes and economic hardships; an upset farmer
led a force to close courthouses so no more people would go to
jail for not paying taxes; led to questioning of the Articles of
Confederation and the creation of the Constitution.
Shays' Rebellion
1894
Populist businessman led a march of millions of unemployed
people into Washington, demanding a work relief program.
Coxey's Army
1968
Reports that an American unit killed civilians in Vietnam, including
women and children; led to controversy over the purpose of the
war and bad press for the LBJ administration.
My Lai Massacre
1794
Violent uprising by farmers in western Pennsylvania, due to high
taxes on a certain alcoholic beverage; ended with a show of force
by Washington, demonstrating new government's authority.
