This self-governing region is recognized by 157 UN member states, despite not being a member of the UN. The rest say it is still a region of another country which still occupies the West Bank.
Palestine
This pro-western State unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in 2008. Since then, it has gained recognition from 110 UN member States.
Kosovo
This self-governing region has a free association with New Zealand, meaning that all inhabitants of this island are citizens of New Zealand and have King Charles III as their king. It has relations with 65 UN member states.
Cook Islands
Like the above, this self-governing region also has a free association with New Zealand. It has diplomatic relations with 28 UN member states.
Niue
This now-territory of Morocco has recognition from 46 UN member states. It forms a government in exile in nearby Algeria.
Western Sahara
This island nation has unofficial relationships with most countries in the world, but recognition from only 11 nations. It was kicked out of the UN in 1971.
Taiwan
This country claims itself to be the successor to a British Protectorate that united with Somalia after independence. It proclaimed independence after the 1991 civil war that led to the overthrow of Siad Barre. It is only recognized by 1 UN member state, Israel, although it has unofficial relationships with several others.
Somaliland
This terr itory of Georgia proclaimed independence in 1999 after Russia invaded. It is recognized by Russia, Syria, Venezuela, Nauru, and Nicaragua, as well as three non-UN member states.
South Ossetia
This territory of Georgia also proclaimed independence in 1999, and experiences the same recognition as the above territory, except that it has 2 non-UN member states recognizing it.
Abkhazia
This island nation declared independence in 1971 after Turkey invaded and occupied the northern portion of the island. It is only recognized by Turkey.
Northern Cyprus
This territory of Moldova declared independence in 1991, and is supported by Russia. However, no UN-member nations recognized it.
Transnistria
This territory of Somalia broke away from Mogadishu in 1998. It's name is derived from an ancient kingdom that occupied the horn of Africa. It is not recognized by any state.
Puntland
This territory of Palestine broke away from the West Bank when Hamas was elected in 2006. It is currently at war with Israel.
Gaza
This Kurdish-majority region in northern Iraq has struggled for independence for years, and it has exercised de-facto control of Kurdish areas since 2005.
Kurdistan
Also known as Western Kurdistan, this other Kurdish-majority region has proclaimed itself to be an autonomous state since the Syrian civil war started in 2011. It's only international recognition to date is by the Catalan Parliament.
Rojava
Several tribes form a de-facto independent communist state in the outskirts of Myanmar. It is officially recognized by the Myanmar government as a semi-autonomous state, although it exercises no authority there.
Wa
This Anglophone area of Cameroon declared independence in 2017 and is currently fighting a civil war with the Francophone region of Cameroon. It's name is derived from the bay at the mouth of the Wouri River.
