Field marshal or in German, Generalfeldmarschall was the second highest rank in the German army and Air Force during the Nazi regime but can trace its roots back to 1631. With the dissolution of the Third Reich in 1945 both the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic stopped using the rank.
