It's not particularly close either. As of June 2023, Egypt has more than 112 million.
So, sure, France was imperialist. Once upon a time, it had the ability to impose its world view to the world. So was UK. But so is clearly USA. It is not necessarily about having possessions (even if US have some: Puerto Rico, Guam,…, had more: Cuba, Philipines,… and more importantly, for today, wants more: Greenland, and US president consider himself "acting president of Venezuela". None of the other "imperialist" countries have, today, such desire). But about wanting to dictates world order.
I would say, that France is still imperialist. Not because we still own oversees territories, but because we still weight on other countries policies (by way, for example, of "Franc CFA"). But that is nothing compared to demanding Geenland, imperialismwise.
But, well, the 2018 change is just about USA changing its mind about Jerusalem, nothing more.
I believe our good buddies over in le France have territory in six continents which is impressive also. Viva la France & God save the Queen.
