People call American's imperialists but it's actually the French who are the imperialists.
+12
Level 36
Feb 15, 2020
The americans don't need overseas territories, they already have a country the size of a continent. The same can't be said about France or the UK.
+22
Level 82
Jun 3, 2021
The Americans have exerted imperialistic pressures on numerous countries, and what may be called their empire just happens to be contiguous.
+1
Level 44
Jan 25, 2026
"imperialism" comes from "imperium". Which is the ability to dictate commands. Hence the title of "imperator" given to generals in the roman republic (including Caesar, who was never emperor) and then to the roman empire itself.

So, sure, France was imperialist. Once upon a time, it had the ability to impose its world view to the world. So was UK. But so is clearly USA. It is not necessarily about having possessions (even if US have some: Puerto Rico, Guam,…, had more: Cuba, Philipines,… and more importantly, for today, wants more: Greenland, and US president consider himself "acting president of Venezuela". None of the other "imperialist" countries have, today, such desire). But about wanting to dictates world order.

I would say, that France is still imperialist. Not because we still own oversees territories, but because we still weight on other countries policies (by way, for example, of "Franc CFA"). But that is nothing compared to demanding Geenland, imperialismwise.

+20
Level 94
Jan 13, 2020
Israel's capital has been Jerusalem, by law, since 1980. Because many other nations don't acknowledge Israel's sovereignty over Jerusalem, most embassies are in Tel Aviv instead. The US recently moved their embassy to Jerusalem, but not because of a capital change.

The nations of the UK play football as separate entities (or “countries” if you like). England won the world cup in 1966 and STILL go on, and on and on, about it now. Those of us from the other nations of Britain love hearing about it. It never gets boring.

The change Tel Aviv→Jerusalem is about other countries acknowledging it or not. Plus, that question is a bit american-centered, since basically, it is just about USA (anyway, the whole Jetpunk is American-centered anyway. There are only 6 countries in the world recognizing Jerusalem as capital of Israel. But since once of them is USA, Jetpunk adopted it — others are Guatemala, Papua, Kosovo, Honduras and Paraguay. Plus, of course Israel. I doubt it is because Honduras acknowledged Jerusalem as capital that you are asking the question...).

But, well, the 2018 change is just about USA changing its mind about Jerusalem, nothing more.

The Constitution only stipulates that the president must be a "natural born citizen".. children born to American citizens overseas are still natural born citizens, as are any children born in the United States regardless of the citizenship of their parents. The media-fed faux controversy about where John McCain was born, or the BS conspiracy theories about where Barack Obama was born, were always in reality a non-issue.
