Good quiz. Not thinking outside the box meant that I failed to guess the third US river. However, I believe that both the Tocantins and the Madeira are longer than the Purus and that the answer to the question about the third-longest river in Brazil should therefore be Tocantins. I found data that says the Purus is between 3360 and 3380 km long, the Madeira is a bit longer if you follow the longest tributary, but the other tributary has a larger discharge at the confluence and I'm opposed to this inconsistent way of identifiying the length of a river, with the Mississippi being the length of the Mississippi and not the Missouri to the confluence and then the Mississippi, same goes for Ob and Irtysh, but then on the other hand people will say the White Nile is the headwater of the Nile, when actually the Blue Nile is by far the larger body of water, and thus in my opinion the Amazon is way longer than the Nile, even when we take into account that the Ucayali is not the main tributary, but rather the Marañón. The Tocantins is shorter than the Purus with less than 3000 km.

I see. It seems an unorthodox way of calculating the length of a river, especially since the volume of a tributary can vary widely by season and over time by climate change or man-made intervention. Surely, the only logical way is to measure length from the sea up the longest tributary (no matter that the name might change several times)? Anyway, having looked at several sources, there seems to be a good deal of disagreement as to which river would be number three even on that measure. Maybe you should accept Purus, Madeira or Tocantins!

But this method is also not used consistently. The discharge used for the method I prefer is always an average over a long period of time. I actually feel that my method is a lot more logical: Imagine a large river that at some point along its course occasionally has inflow from an almost completely dried up wadi, that was a river for many hundreds of kilometres before starting to slowly dry up for another hundred kilometres before barely reaching the large river, now not more than a little stream in especially rainy days and completely dry in the dry season. Is this river the longest tributary?

To the climate change and man-made intervention I would say, that is just a fact of life and if the discharge shifts from one to another river, then the other tributary is now the main stem.
