The 108 Stars of Destiny of Suikoden IV by Picture

Arriving in Japan in August of '04 and nearly everywhere else by early '05 for the Sony PlayStation 2 was the fourth installment in the Suikoden JRPG series. Like the previous entry on PS2, Suiko IV's team played with the Suikoden formula once again. The usual six-character battle teams were reduced to four, which is more common in JRPGs but seen as limiting in a Suikoden game. The setting was also wildly different, not just by location, which was an archipelago in the middle of the ocean and far from the lands of the first three games, but by chronological placement, as it takes place 156 years before the events of Suikoden I. Such a dramatic shift in time and location allowed the developers a nearly clean slate for lore development, but left players feeling less connected to the characters and the story than previous games. The game also required the player to navigate its world via an often-cumbersome ship, a move that felt inspired by The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, but handled much more slowly and with a high rate of enemy encounter that slowed progress even further. All of this resulted in a game that has become something of a black sheep amongst Suikoden fans. It has its admirers, and is still a perfectly fine JRPG game in its own right, but evidently leaves things to be desired as a Suikoden entry.
