Has Blogging Gone Too Serious?

+11

Introduction

Every day I lurk the blog page, waiting for something interesting to pop up, yet there seems to be less than 1 blog posted a day. I remember just a few years ago there was around 3-5 every day. I bet there are others, unwilling to post something but wanting to interact. Or maybe it's just me. Don't get me wrong, some of the blogs now have insane amounts of information and effort put into them, but still they get few likes and few comments.

Me waiting for someone to post something

The Problem

What's strange is, back when blogs were at their peak, the format was really simple, and much more difficult to perfect. There wasn't all these structured paragraphs and headings. My criticism of the new blog format is although it is technically better, it actually seems really imposing to me and not that beginner-friendly. That, however, is just my personal opinion. I do understand that using raw HTML isn't reader friendly, but maybe they could rework or resimplify the more modern blogging format they have now.

Really, I also feel the site is trying to be something it's not. JetPunk blogs are never going to pull in users searching on the internet, so why does it need to be so professional, the blogs so perfect? Quizmakers should be able to interact and have fun, to some extent. To give credit to the moderators and creators of this site, they are very lenient and I definitely have deserved to get banned more than a few times. This is more of a culture problem.

Maybe the root of it is just that people were getting shot down so much for not having good blogs that all of the commenters got scared off from blogs and then the good bloggers didn't want to blog anymore.

The Solution

We should create more stupid blogs again. Blogs like this. Yeah, I wrote this in under an hour. Share your ideas and experiences, maybe with completely unrelated and real world stuff. If it becomes a problem then it'll need to be improved again. But honestly anything's better than the current dead state of JetPunk blogs.

Another important thing is to interact with other people's blogs, because that just supports the cycle as a whole.

Thank you for listening to my rambling session.

:)

Just found something funny. Look at this blog I posted in 2021, perfect example of the hyper critical perspective that maybe killed blogs. Link

I’ve noticed that there seem to be less blogs. I also frequently check the RUB but have felt there isn’t as much activity. I had a few plans for blogs this summer but one of my travelogue plans got ruined due to visa issues and I just never got around to anything else.

You can see from this chart that the number of blogs this summer, particularly in July, was significantly lower than earlier months in 2025.

Maybe after the message-board incident, people were less willing to publish things on JetPunk?

That's a fair point, I've only been back on consistently for a few months

Blogs (and all activity on JetPunk, for that matter) generally tend to dwindle in the summer months of the year as school lets out and people are no longer procrastinating by writing blogs. While I do agree somewhat with your point that the standard for blog quality has gone up, I don't think this is really a bad thing. Even if it takes longer for blogs to be posted, I'd rather have a good blog every once in a while than a bunch of mediocre blogs everyday. And I wouldn't even say the bar for quality is prohibitively high either. Generally as long as you make an effort to write an interesting blog people (especially newer and younger users) will still positively engage with you. And I disagree about the blog editor being confusing. Speaking as someone who was writing blogs with old system, the widgets make the blog creation process far simpler than raw HTML.

And regarding the question of why blogs should be professional and perfect: why not? Even if no one reads a blog, shouldn't the creator feel a sense of pride and satisfaction in what they create?

You definitely brought up some good points. keep in mind I am not attacking good blogs, I am supporting worse blogs. The creator should feel pride for creating something to the best of their ability. At the same time we shouldn't attack those who make blogs unless they are truly pointless and "trash".

I actually agree. Back then, there used to be tons of blogs on a variety of subjects and although some were quite unprofessional, still I think it was better than nowadays where RUB is actually dead. I think of writing a blog many times but the fear of being unprofessional stops me from doing anything.

With the fall of the MB, we'll take what we can get. Don't be afraid to share your blogs with us :)

Effort matters, if I can tell a user put effort into a blog, even if it's high quality content, it's ok. If they're putting in effort they're going to improve.

But personally I don't like creating mediocre content, everything I create that can be shared with the world has to be perfect lol, even if the blog section is emptier I'd rather choose quality over quantity. But yes, more blogs would be nice

Interesting. I agree maybe we shouldn't make really low effort blogs, however I don't think "mediocre" is necessarily a bad thing for people who wish to partake.

I feel like I should comment, since I currently have the most amount of published blogs (I don't know how to be honest, it just happened).

The newer system makes it way easier to write blogs, although I do know some HTML, I usually have to look it up to make sure it's right first.

I try to make my blogs informative with some humour thrown in, I don't know if it works, you'll have to ask the readers. I try my best to put in the effort to make my blogs a reasonable quality, again you'll have to ask my readers.

As to the amount of blogs being made, I think there is a number of factors. Summertime is always quieter, and the incident with the message board saw some users that also wrote blogs being banished. I think there is a general consensus to make better quality blogs rather than throw-away quickly made blogs. I'm not referring to this current blog by the way, I think you have raised a valid question and discussion.

Anyway, check out my blogs...sorry, this isn't the time or place.

I really enjoy your blogs and yeah, I get why summer would be slower. I think your right, throwaway blogs are still bad, but maybe more variety would be cool like about other topics with things people experience in their lives or their opinions or something

In the words of the wisetoo above, "I feel like I should comment", since I do participate a lot in the RUB. I'm a bit late, but whatever.

I never used the old blogging system. However, I love the current format and tools, and find it very easy to navigate (disregarding mobile). I feel like beginners would also find it easy. I was a beginner using this same format about a year ago, and found it pretty straightforward, asking a few questions here and there.

Agreeing with Insaniot, I would like to see higher quality blogs every once in a while rather than 5 trashy blogs every day. Blogging is an art hidden on JetPunk which only a small number of true Punkers actually spend time on. I like the community here, and think that, once summer is over and all the kids come back, that blogging will pick up once again. JetPunk always has dry spells during the summer, which makes the art of blogging that much better imo.

I certainly wouldn't say that blogging is in a dead state. The river never completely dries up, just holds back the flow until the monsoon season arrives again. Blogging isn't the face of JetPunk for a reason. Not every user needs to write a blog. Without blogs, JetPunk would be completely different.

This is all coming from a modern-era blogger. I try to keep the section full and happy with unique ideas and such. Reading blogs daily doesn't need to be an outlet from the real world. That would only make blogs less exciting, causing the art to die off even quicker. Higher quality blogs are what I enjoy the most, because I know the user spent time and thought making it. That's the kind of blog I want to read, not a quick little chat message. We had a Message Board for that kind of stuff, so I understand where the urge comes from. I relate. But this special section of JetPunk should be cherished, not damaged like what once was the Message Board. I think we all learned that day.

I disagree but respect your opinion. I like having a place where I can just hangout with others, and the formatting of the message board is tragic. But I get why others would also want to keep it clean.

As a very sporadic blogger myself, I think the general quality of blogs has always been the same. From what I've seen, the tendency is for people to make high-quality stuff normally.

I like to blog about think pieces, but over my time here, I've seen historical stuff, geography stuff, daily stories, etc. I don't know. I think it's always been semi-serious, but I guess I can see the necessity for some more laid-back stuff.
