JetPunk Flash Cards: A New Age for Knowledge-Seekers

A New Dawn

Like many JetPunk users, I assume, I am addicted to knowledge. I do all I can to acquire more knowledge from a variety of topics, which is why I use JetPunk in the first place.

However, gaining knowledge on JetPunk has been quite difficult in the past. On a quiz, if you don't know the answer, you have to give up on it and check to see what you didn't know. Then you had to remember everything you didn't get for the next time you take the quiz. In addition, once you'd gotten 100% on the quiz, you were likely to forget the things you tried to remember in order to ace the quiz.

However, those days may be gone soon. Recently, there has been a new feature added to JetPunk: Flash Cards. Instead of having to give up on every quiz, you can now study everything beforehand and perhaps even afterwards so that you don't forget! This blog will explore the effects that this new feature might have on the future of the site.

Points

Every JetPunk user wants points. After all, you need to be certain levels in order to do certain things (e.g. level 15 for making quizzes, level 35 for making charts, and level 40 for making blogs). In order to get points, you have to get a high enough score on featured quizzes. However, there are many featured quizzes on topics that many people may not be all too familiar with. Take a look at the screenshot below from my stats from the 100 Biggest Cities on a World Map quiz.

The left column is global percentage. The right column is my percentage. It is ordered from lowest to highest for my percentage.

As you can see, it took me ages and many different takes to get the score I needed on the quiz to get the Cities Badge. The reason I had to take it so many times is because I didn't actually know 85 of the 100 biggest cities in the world. I had to learn by giving up multiple times and hoping I remember the answers for next time. Flash Cards can avoid just this. Had I had Flash Cards, I could avoided just this.

Badges

As mentioned in the previous section, the reason I tried the 100 Biggest Cities on a World Map quiz so many times is because I wanted to get the Cities Badge. I recently created a chart on the number of users with each badge (it's actually what gave me the idea for this blog!). Take a look at it below.

196 has by far the most users. The explanation for this is simple: there's only one quiz you have to ace to get it, and it's the most popular quiz on JetPunk. Another thing that can be seen in this chart is that the badges with more and harder quizzes have fewer owners. With Flash Cards, I am expecting these numbers to go up. People will have more opportunities to study the topics they need to and get the badge!

Limitations of Flash Cards

Flash Cards aren't perfect for all this. They can't be used for every quiz. For example, it is hard to use them for the Countries of the World Quiz as the quiz has no hints. All it is is just naming the countries of the world.

That being said, there can be ways to work around this. It could be possible to, on the flash cards, have a picture of the world map with a country highlighted, giving the position of a country in the world and having to name it from there. This may not exactly be what the user was hoping for, though.

Verdict

This blog was not as good as I was hoping it would be but I think it is still able to address its point. JetPunk has entered a new era. Whether Flash Cards will become and remain a huge part of the site or they're just another one of those features that everyone will soon forget about, they definitely change the way the site works, no matter how big of a change that may be. Only two days ago did it become possible for anyone to create their own flashcards, and only today was there a tab in the drop down menu for user-created Flash Cards. We just have to wait and see what they will do to this site.
