Welcome!
I'm beginning a story which I think could be pretty unique and entertaining for the community. I'll make more chapters, so if you like this one, stay tuned. Tell me what you think, and enjoy the read!
Some needed context: Our character has been dropped into the JetPunk website (specifically the top-left of the homepage; I feel if I don't say this most people, if not all, will be lost). As our character observes their surroundings, they take careful note of what is happening...
Chapter 1 - The Wall
Welcome.
That's all I can see from where I'm standing. Or, at least that's what I think it says. Big, black, blocky letters staring into my soul which I hope won't tumble forward and squash me like a bug. I just arrived, and don't want to leave already. If this is all I can see right now, I can't fathom how much there is beyond these letters.
"Welcome" I mumble to myself. A warm welcome is the least I could have asked for, since not knowing where I am is the big thing on my mind. Where am I supposed to go from here? I don't see any arrows or directions, none of which I can read. Behind me are some smaller letters, or are they numbers? I have no clue, and there is really no way to tell. I think they're backwards anyway.
"Which way should I go?" I ask myself. For all I know, I am the only person here.
"Hello!" I scream into the vastness of this seemingly endless box, hoping for any response from the other side. All I get in return is my own voice, echoing back, telling me I am here by myself. Shivers run down my back at the thought of being here completely alone. A warm welcome turned into a cool breeze, but my shirt doesn't move. I am imagining it, my brain is already tired of looking at endless white floors and huge towers which spell words I try to read. The letters I am looking at now are backwards, unlike the "Welcome" sign which was forwards. I can make out a "Q" pretty easily, followed by a "u", an "i", and two "z"s. I can't make out the letters past that, but I figure it says "Quizzes." Now I'm confused, even more than before. "Where am I?"
I don't know how I got here, believe it or not. I wake up and find myself trapped in... something. I need to move. I can't just stand here and look at things. There isn't even much to look at. So, I decide to turn around and head towards the big "Welcome" sign, or at least that's what I think it says. I can make it out alright, but the size is starting to mess with me. Not thinking hard about it, I keep walking, still having no idea where it'll take me. Hopefully it's the entrance to something spectacular! I bottle up these thoughts and just walk.
Not long after passing through the "W" and "e" letters, I see a bunch of yellow in the distance. Finally some color! I start running with excitement, knowing something waits for me ahead. As I get closer, the yellow turns into different hues of yellow, and a long blue wall holds everything at a standstill.
"What in the giant box is that?" I say, speechless at what I'm looking at. Upon closer inspection, the bunch of yellow forms the shape of a fish, I think, and the blue wall goes on for as long as the eye can see. Well, my eye that is. Next to the big fish are letters I can read from where I am, but, they don't make a word I've ever seen before. Staring at this crazy wall, I try to comprehend what I'm witnessing.
I blink for the first time in a minute and a half. "What is JetPunk?" I ask myself, since there is no one around to ask instead.
I walk closer to the wall where the big fish is. I have the strange urge to touch it, since the only thing I've touched so far is the floor. Once I reach the fish, I rub my smooth fingers across its fin, which is about five times my size. It feels like the floor, slick and clean. Satisfied, I turn right and head towards the letters which I saw a few moments ago. I also want to touch them, but assume they feel the same as the big fish. My thoughts start rushing in, and I still don't know where I am. I have so many questions I want answers to, but don't know how I'll ever get answers. Will I be here forever, looking for a way out? I don't want to think about that, and instead, keep my head up.
When I reached the letters, they appeared the same as the ones I saw at the beginning, though white instead of black. They go nicely with the blue wall on which they stand, and now that I'm close enough, I can see more words in the distance also hugging the long blue wall. I can't tell what they say but I know they're there.
Not knowing where to go, I begin another walk, hoping to find something more interesting than words. I've read enough words. My stomach growls, and my foot cramps up, causing me to stop. I need to rest, but I also need food and water.
"How long is that wall?" I wonder.
To be continued...
The first chapter of a book usually isn't action-packed anyway...
