An Immortal Man
The first assumption and the easiest one is just that he's actually magical and magic actually exists in the James Bond Universe (the JBU?) But I don't believe that magic is real in this universe mainly because every other instance of magic or I guess Voodoo, is actually explainable: The hat appearing in Rosie Carver's room is explained by someone just opening the window and putting it on her bed, the reason this is even possible is because practically everyone on San Monique is working for Kananga and Whisper literally does get into Bond's room like 5 minutes earlier. Solitaire's tarot reading is simply just being good at cards and her losing that ability is just a placebo because she believes she's lost her powers. James shooting Samedi in the head and him not only not being affected by it but also turning into a statue, and how his eyes moved after heaving a hole blown into his head, is explained by the scarecrows earlier in the film, they had movable eyes. But you may be wondering why would he fake voodoo if he's Baron Samedi? That's what we need to establish, Baron Samedi is an actual myth he has an entire Wikipedia page and all. In the book Baron Samedi is just another name for Mr. Big (Mr. Big is also Kananga in the movie just not in the book because Kananga doesn't exist) The character we see in the movie is NOT Baron Samedi, why would a voodoo of the dead work with a man who's trying to force drug dealers out of business? Simple because it's not the real Baron Samedi just like in the book, it's a man using the name and likeness of Baron Samedi. We've seen Samedi without his makeup before, and it's when his either implied or explicitly shown he's working with Kananga, AND if he were the real Baron Samedi, why would he need a secret trapdoor operated by Kananga's men? Simple. He wouldn't. Ok, we've established that this is not the real Baron Samedi, but how do we figure out how he lives, and in order to figure this out we have to take a look into the real world and the production of Live and Let Die, the snakes used in the filming of the movie, were all non-venomous and no matter what you say if the movie shows a close up of the snake and you could google and check that that snake is non-venomous, it's likely non-venomous in the movie to. (you might say but what about San Monique? It's not real so by your logic it's not real in the movie. We don't see and wide shots of the entire island, so it works) but if the snakes aren't venomous how did Baines die? He very clearly gets bitten and then dies. Simple he had a heart attack from the stress and fear going through his mind he's tied up he believes a venomous snake has bitten him, and he's surrounding by a "Voodoo Cult". Great everything's explained. Now I'll run you through what happened: The Baron Samedi statue rises from the grave while below are Kananga's men unaware that James Bond is here, James shoots the statue its mechanical eyes move up to simulate an immortal god like appearance, James shoots it again until it falls apart. Then the "real" Baron Samedi appears has a quick sword fight with James, and is shoved into a coffin full of snakes, now, Baron Samedi knows the snakes are non-venomous but pretends to have died giving James and Solitaire false hope in believing the killed him. After they leave, he follows them until they board the train, he watches Tee Hee fall to his death and upon realizing he got away does his iconic laugh. Not to mention he's the head of a cult and cult leaders often make themselves out to be larger than life when they're not.
