No, most of it was written by J.R.R. himself. Christopher compiled and edited the material after his father's death, and wrote some passages himself to connect the stories and resolve gaps.
From what I can tell Christopher was more of an editor than an author.
95% of the sentences in the book were written by his dad, however in many cases JRR had written multiple drafts for the same thing. Christopher's job was mainly to combine the various drafts of each chapter into something coherent.
9/10. Absolutely lucky guess on the backpack thing. Based on fjall, sounds like fall, you go hiking in the fall, you need a backpack to hike. Whatever works, right? I almost said SpaceX, but decided that couldn't possibly be right and went for China. So, that didn't work.
