I know that Holland is strictly only a part of the Netherlands but from my Dutch friends I know it's used pretty interchangeably. I don't think it's quite like referring to England when you mean UK. I am English living in Germany and I do correct people when they call Scottish or Welsh people English or say a Scottish or Welsh town is in England. 😀
Delft is a beautiful small city that you walk or cycle around with ease…the shops are filled with lots of white and blue china objects and cheese. It’s really not all that far from Amsterdam, well worth a visit.
Haha I do love the dishware theme but sadly that question actually doesn't fit. "Plato" is the Spanish word for plate. Meanwhile "plata" means silver. It's the river of silver, not the river plate 😂 ("Argentina" itself comes from the Latin words for "silver-bearing." "Argentum" means silver and is the reason silver is Ag on the periodic table. Come to think of it, though, the question would still fit the theme because of silverware. But it needs to be changed to say "River of Silver.")
Not all names have to be an exact translation. River Plate is the official English name, even in Argentina itself. One of Buenos Aires' largest football teams is called Club Atlético River Plate.
This came up on a quiz I made, and in researching it found that 'River Plate' is the most common name in British English, but virtually unused in American English. A google search for the term predominantly returns sites related to the Argentine football club that uses the spelling.
The other day I got horology because my kid's learning Italian; today I knew delft because my other kid learned about it in first grade in learning about the Dutch history of NYC. Finally the kids are getting helpful!
This is an English-only feature. If you are not a native English speaker, you are of course welcome to take the quiz, but it is NOT designed for you. Sorry.
Quizmaster, could one of the themes be all user-submitted questions? I bet you've done it before and I haven't noticed, but I enjoy answering my fellow quizzers' questions when they pop up!
There was a period in the long, illustrious history of the DTQ when this was common - maybe a few months in from the start. You can work through the archive to find it.
The nursery rhyme is what kept me from a 10/10 today.
