Blog help

Submitted by toowise on January 27, 2025
Hi everyone, as you may or may not know I have been writing blogs about the origin of many cities over the last couple of years or so. I did all 196 national capitals, 196 second cities, and, at the time of writing, 3/4 of the 50 state capitals of the US. (I must be mad). I am currently working on the final blog in the series, and also a blog on other capitals to be released after the state capitals. These are not what I need help on!

I am starting to research the origins of certain foods and where they get their names. I have started with Hot Dogs, but I'm not sure which foods to write about. Here's where you come in. I need you to suggest some foods that have specific names rather than just generic terms. For example, Jambalaya, Rubens Sandwich (Have I even spelled that right?) or Haggis. I may or may not be using those three depending how the research evolves.

The blog will probably be finished in a few months time, but I will make a note of all suggestions and credit you with the suggestion.

the reason for this request is that there are some foods that are well known only in a specific area or country and that I have never heard of. I just saves me time trawling through websites and Wikipedia looking for something I don't know exists.

Anyways, over to you....

Kimchi. Tartar sauce. Wasabi. Horse Radish.

Also, are you doing food brands as well?

Thanks for the suggestions, I am not planning on doing food brands at this point, but it may pop up in the future.

Personally I've always what the origin of a 'Beavertail' is.

Joking aside, this is a surprisingly difficult question. Most of my favourite foods are literally just two English words combined together. Mashed potatoes. Ice cream. Milk shake.

My picks would probably be tacos and spaghetti.

Thanks for the suggestions, they've been added to my list of possibilities. I may have to do a separate blog about the different pasta names.

Soy sauce. I hear that the soybean was named after the sauce, but what was the sauce named after? 🤔

Good one, and intriguing. If the sauce came before the bean, you have to wonder what the bean was called before the sauce. Sounds a bit chicken and egg to me.
