Dislexia = Extra time?

Submitted by Boltz on July 21, 2025
As someone who reads at about half the speed of the average adult I often run out of time with quizzes. It would be helpful if some allowance could be made for this. I suggest that the time allocation is altered for those of us who suffer in this way to give an extra 50% more time to complete the quiz.

I don't wish to sound unsympathetic, but this seems a bit like a dwarf asking the IOC to change the rules on the long jump because biology has put them at a natural disadvantage.

I see no advantage to making systemic changes for the benefit of (what I presume is) a tiny minority of users at the inconvenience of the large majority.

The big issue for me in doing this would be in things like speed quizzes, where the entire point is to complete them in a specific time. As bantqq1 said, arbitrarily increasing the time limit would encourage cheating on these quizzes.

There is the option to play quizzes untimed. When you click Start Quiz, there's a clock icon to the left of the answer box. However, you won't score points this way.

I can't see it being worth QM's time to build a whole Dyslexia section. I don't know what your coding skills are like, but maybe this is a niche in the online quizzing market that you could tap into?

I'd be too hard to implement correctly.

I think a better way to help people with dyslexia would be the introduction of an "easy to read" font, which is the solution many school textbooks and websites adopt.

a font change does sound like a good fix, kinda like the colorblind mode thats already in settings

Just to follow up on this, on one of the websites I’ve been using for work, they have a dyslexia toggle where you can select different overlays so it changes the font colour and background to improve readability.

For JetPunk, this is something that is probably quite simple to do - a variation of dark mode, I would imagine - and surely suits all parties.

Messed up that some of the commenters care more about handwringing over theoretical "cheaters" than about disabled people having basic access. It's a silly little quiz site, people, not the LSATs. People who aren't "cheating" are almost entirely unaffected by other people doing so. Meanwhile, this feature would allow OP to actually have fun and enjoy the site instead of constantly being cut off from quiz after quiz due to an arbitrary time limitation that doesn't mesh with their disability.
