Media that has made you cry

Submitted by Jeremy on October 5, 2025
This was brought up in a recent post and I realized it's an interesting thing to think about - music, movies, etc that have been so emotionally hard hitting they've been able to make you cry.

I'm usually not a particularly emotional person, but off the top of my head, there's a couple songs that have made me at least tear up independently of feeling any sort of particular emotion before (ie putting the song on specifically because I was sad) -

King Park by La Dispute

Something in the Orange, God Speed, Pink Skies, Leaving by Zach Bryan

Letters from Home by John Michael Montgomery

Taxi Cab by Twenty One Pilots

Dress Blues by Jason Isbell

Rattlesnake by Jack Van Cleaf

American Teenager by Ethel Cain

For movies, I think the only one that's ever done it is Brokeback Mountain.

curious to see if anyone else has had similar experiences

I meant more something like art that was specifically intended to elicit an emotional reaction but that works too, I guess

So far the movie 'Bridge of Spies' is the only media form that's made me cry.

Here are some movies that made me cry:

-Grave of the Fireflies (so beautiful, but so hard I can't watch if anymore)

-Million Dollar Baby

-Brokeback Mountain

-The Iron Giant

-The Lion King (No Scar, don't do that!)

Nothing really surprising in the end.

Also shed a few tears on the TV Show This is Us.

But I can't really find any songs that made me cry.

I can't recall actually ever crying over a piece of media, but here are some that I remember that brought me the closest to doing so.

Difference Maker by NEEDTOBREATHE

Red Dead Redemption 2

Schindler's List

The only one that I came close to crying was strangely a comedy series.

The final episode of Blackadder Goes Forth is a normal sitcom set in WW1 for most of the episode, it is just the final minute that does it for me.

Definitely Up. And La La Land. And Groundhog Day. A few other times I've come close to crying like the aforementioned tv show This is Us.

Songs don't really make me cry but there are a couple of Brandon Lake songs that almost make cry.

And then of course there's movies/shows that make me laugh so hard that I end up crying. The only ones off the top of my head that have done that is Billy Madison. I know there's others I just can't remember at the moment.

Media in general makes me cry, and not for a good reason
