Please allow alternative spelling "caltrap" (there are several listed in wikipedia, but this one fits the grid too!).

This might be nitpicking, but I am not entirely happy with "Pale". as far as I know, the area is always referred to as the "Pale of Settlement" (it is almost like accepting "war" for "war of the Roses").

i expected the answers to form some sort of clue for the last name, it turns out this is not the case.

Anyway, IMHO the 3x3 scheme would be way more useful if the words could be formed only by connecting adjacent letters.
