Independence From Who?

What country did each country get its independence from? If the country was a colony, it is most likely its colonizer. Some countries come from unions. Some come from previous versions of themself. Stick by this philosophy: If you wouldn't change the country's color on a map, then it probably isn't that country. i.e. The Kingdom of France and the Republic of France would both be the same country because they would still be considered France, while the Kalmar Union would be different than Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.
