Malta island is not in the list because Malta (country) have 514000 inhabitants, 37000 of those in Gozo island.

Shouldn't Södertörn, Sweden be here as well? It has a population of 520,000+ people and is in the baltic sea.

Ah, interesting! Similar to Peloponnese in Greece and Delmarva in the US, Sodertorn is considered (by Wikipedia anyway) a peninsula and not an island.
